Our Cake Design Choices for 2019

Wedding cake design is by far one of our favourite parts of planning a wedding. You got to think about colours, flowers, the decorations, the cake topper, the stand, how the table will look, what will be on it, the layers of the cake, and of course the best part the flavours.

We work with clients with many different aesthetics, colour palettes, and ideas when it comes to wedding cake design.

We also work with clients with many different allergies, and things they want to get out of the cake (I’m with you there; with both a gluten and dairy allergy I’m limited to my options on cake. BUT what I get my hands on I eat it all. Cause, well. It’s cake!)

We’ve put together this blog post to talk all things wedding cake design related and show you some of our top picks for wedding cake designs in 2019.

I want to start out by giving a big shout out to buttercream wedding cakes. There really is nothing wrong with keeping it simple and getting a really beautifully designed buttercream cake. Chances are you can find many bakers that can do this, you can get a fun design, and flavours, and just look at these cakes – you can add any sort of colour, flowers, or cake toppers you want to the cake after it’s iced.

I am a huge fan of these sort of layered iced cakes with all these different details and goodies on top. It might be a fun addition to your cake table to add two cakes; one of both of your initials. Make sure though, you have someone there to cut up these letter cakes afterwards. They’re so pretty that people might not touch them on their own.

I’m a big fan of abstract wedding cake designs. And these ones are outstanding. A simple cake underneath with some airbrushing details and then these beautiful bright coloured strokes of white chocolate. Great for modern, or art gallery, or just a funky wedding.

We do a lot of gardening and backyard weddings – out in the woods, out in the country. And there’s just something so beautiful about that garden fresh feel. If you’re wanting to class it up in your design pick a wedding cake designs that brings that all together as well. Added elegance is brought into this cake design through the beautiful gum-paste flowers all over this five-tier cake.

There’s just something to be said about a beautiful dark rich and moody cake. This black cake is a simple two tier cake but what they did in this wedding cake design to bring in gold flecking and beautiful almost granite like texture is stunning. This cake stand is also a really great example about remembering the full scope of your wedding cake design. Not only are you designing a cake, you also design a whole table. I’m sure the rest of this table design is perfect – even if it’s a small cocktail table. This cake stand and the ferns and greenery around the bottom speaks volumes to this chic modern wedding.

I don’t know about you guys but I am the hugest fan of icing! As a kid I could just sit there and eat icing by the spoonful (no shame). This cake is just covered in all things beautiful, of course icing I mean. There’s a big trend moving towards just one simple cutting cake in wedding cake design and, we like it. If you’re going to do a simple cutting cake make sure it’s fun and include some personality. Your wedding cake design shouldn’t be void of your wedding theme and it’s the perfect place in the wedding to really tie things together.

This is another option of a simple cutting cake you could have, or one cake and maybe a whole display of cakes on the cake table. You can go simple with the cake but still have an impact. Keep it simple with some rough icing, some greenery and berries on top. The fun you can have with cake stands really ties everything together in the wedding cake design too. So don’t neglect the cake stand or these cute little cake options.

All right, so back to the simple cake, if you’re going to go simple you could really make it pop with just a crazy large cake topper. This one is super fun and whimsical and can totally tying your theme; it’s a fun twist to an otherwise classic cake design.

These crazy colourful cake designs get me every time and I just don’t know why. They might not be the right fit for every wedding, they might be a little childish, but they still are just so rad. If your having a colour for wedding, Carnaval or fiesta themed wedding, or if you’re just doing a wedding on a certain holidays like New Year’s Eve these cakes are something that could really just be a beautiful vibrant pop. If your having a Black & Gold wedding and want to bring in accent colours consider corals and teals and bring that together in your cake. You can’t really go wrong with a cake you can eat as finger food.

I hear this all the time: “Nobody touches the wedding cake. No one ever eats it”.

I’m gonna say it again because I say it every time I hear that statement: “Nobody touched the wedding cake because it wasn’t planned out properly in the day – it wasn’t factored in as part of the party”.

Make sure when you’re doing your wedding cake design you also are doing a timing plan (aka what we call an itinerary). Make sure you know when you’re going to cut the cake, who is going to cut up the cake into slices and plate it for your guests, and make sure that it’s in your MC notes for it to be announced a few times throughout the night.

You don’t have to have your wedding cake as your dessert for dinner, but make sure you plan it out properly and don’t over or under your cake (the quantity). An added note: make sure if you want to keep the top-tier for your anniversary that it’s all planned out properly as well. There’s nothing worse than collecting all your things at the end of the night or the next day only to discover that nobody put it aside for you. This is a great thing to tell your Wedding Planner, and your venue.

Back to these little cuties; if you’re thinking a cake is too big of a deal, or you want to have a smaller wedding cake but still want to feed all of you guess why not some small little mini cakes? Use the idea of a cupcake and take it one step further and get your cake designer to make cute little hand sized cakes like these.
