How to Have a Flawless Spring Wedding

First of all I’m going to tell you that you cannot have a flawless spring wedding (I got you with that title though right? I know, we all want it!). Spring is such an unpredictable time of year and – like with any wedding – you’re dealing with a lot of moving parts. Most of them being humans, and there’s always a little something that will not go as to planned. This could be as small as the flower girl running down the aisle or not making it down the aisle at all. But really how cute is that? Or something big like the caterer forgetting the brisket at his kitchen 50km away. Yep, it’s happened. (We did A LOT of rearranging and ended up only 20 minutes behind schedule in the end. No guest was the aware of our “unique style of reception” that wasn’t planned)

It’s hard to argue that the wedding day tops the list of most emotional, inspiring, and mind-blowing days of most people’s lives, the big day can also carry a lot of stresses. That’s why it is so important to plan everything carefully and well in advance. As much of the pressure and stress you can take off yourself the better (and really, honestly, a lot of it your Wedding Planner will take on and manage for you).

As experience confirms – times and times again – the weather is one of the most unpredictable factors when it comes to planning a thoughtful wedding day. You can choose the best location for a ceremony, pick the most beautiful wedding flowers out there, make sure the musicians arrive on time, but you cannot request the sun to shine bright during the entire day. Neither you can ask the rain to change its plans and start tomorrow (well you can actually, but I’m not too sure most weddings have that sort of budget).

Looking from this perspective, spring weddings seem like the riskiest and hard to plan. Although at the same time, they are the most beautiful and fresh. To help you get the most out of the spring weather – without risking too much – we’ve made up a list of do’s and don’ts for a flawless spring wedding.

The Do’s for a Flawless Spring Wedding

Think about a tent.

If the idea of a tent wedding makes you want to gag, you should take a look at these beautiful wedding tent decorations first. Not only can a tent save your guest from getting wet and cold, but it can also serve as a perfect attribute to your entire wedding reception. You can do so much with tents, their colouring, linens, lighting, flowers to really make it work with any event design or theme. And you won’t be worried about the rain clouds above your guests’ heads.

Ask your guests to bring umbrellas.

And warm jackets (just in case). If for some reason a tent is not an option for you, ask your guests to come with umbrellas. I would also suggest you provide some extra umbrellas and consider a basket of shawls. Such a simple step can help you stay more relaxed during the ceremony and after. (Tip: It’s easy to add this as a cute little note on the bottom of your invites)

Book a locations where an outdoors party can easily be moved indoors.

Of course, not every wedding location comes with such a great option (and you know we’re all about the rain plan!). But if you’re still looking for a place to hold your wedding ceremony and reception, focus on options with indoor wedding halls on the property. This way, you’ll be able to adjust your plans (this will usually be decided morning of with the help of your Wedding Planner).

The Don’ts for a Flawless Spring Wedding

Don’t trust weather forecasts blindly.

It’s true that modern technologies can predict virtually everything, but there is always a chance for mistakes. Even if your Weather app tells you it’s only a 10% probability of a rain on your special day, it might be still necessary to plan some quick fixes to your outdoor ceremony. (Tip: Don’t look at the weather every 5 minutes! Come up with a great rain plan with your Wedding Planner and then put your phone away. It’s only going to stress you out. We live in Manitoba. We all know that the weather can be raining only minute and sunny and clear the next. Look at the weather the day before and on the day only. Don’t worry yourself with the constant updates that our prairies climate bring)

Don’t ask your guests for a very strict dress code.

You might end up with a lot of grumpy looking guests in nice outfits but covered up in whatever jackets and scarves they could find in the car. If you want your guests to be dressed in a certain manner, make sure there are warm options (like a heater in the tent, or a ballroom as your back up plan). You don’t want your friends to freeze when you’re saying your wedding vows. Trust me, they’re not going to be focused on your love, they’ll be shivering and trying to stay warm instead.

Don’t choose locations with too many flowering trees.

Although it’s true that blossoming trees might serve as a perfect natural decoration for your wedding, you should think of your guests first. As spring is the high season for allergies, making your guests stay close to high-pollen flowers and trees might cause some issues (and be better left for your photo time, not your ceremony).

No matter when your wedding is be sure to simply plan ahead. We all know weather is a factor, but there are so many other variables to consider too (any time of year).

Be sure to work off a great check list (your Wedding Planner will keep you on track with this too) and keep going in your planning. Don’t take large breaks (we’re talking a few months out). If you ‘chip away at it’ all the things you need to do won’t catch up on you.

I absolutely love getting to be a part of spring weddings. I think they’re so lovely, fresh, and it’s just such a wonderful time of year – when there’s all that new life – to start a new chapter in your life. Yes, it’s true, you can’t have a flawless spring wedding but you sure can have a beautiful (and well planned) one.
Happy Planning!
